Companion Planting: Beets

I had never grown beets until last year (2008). They did quite nicely, considering I started out clueless. Here's what beets like to be grown near to:
  • bush beans

  • onions

  • kohlrabi

  • lettuce

  • cabbage

  • broccoli

For some reason, beets do NOT like pole/vining beans. Go figure. They also don't like field mustard or charlock.

Our 2009 square foot raised garden bed has a square of beets at the edge, surrounded by lettuce and onions. We already have sprouts!

Nope, especially this year, since we're getting ready to sell. I have two 8x4 raised beds, delineated like a square foot garden. Three tomatoes, peppers, basil, parsley, carrots, radishes, beets, eggplant, okra, greens, squash and onions that refuse to pop up! We also have in various spots some miniature columnar apple, peach and crabapple trees, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, apples and asparagus. Just planted bean seeds in a couple of places to wind around the porch railings.

Then we have about 20 pots that we'll take with us with various veggies like tomatoes (of course), blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, eggplant, squash, etc.

When we get to the next place, we'll eventually have more space. Tween told me today he wants a trillion blueberry plants!
